What we did in 2017

2017 has been eventful, literally full of events of one form or another. These have brought people into the Centre from near and far and we ended the year feeling satisfied that we’d had a busy and successful 12 months.

We began the year with This n That. This was a community recycling event. Local people came to donate and look through this and that to spot a bargain, or two. The Centre managed to raise much needed funds to help repair the side door to the Centre which had become damaged in the storms.

As Spring arrived we looked forward to our very first Spring Fayre. This was to include workshops from a variety of speakers. Marna Blundy spoke about how to become a Dementia Friend and we were able to find out about twiddlemuffs. Pauline made soup for lunch and we all had a great time. Children competitions and WI hampers and simply amazing crafts all made by local artists and crafts people.

Spring became Summer and we held a Summer Fayre! Cream teas and lots of Paleness amazing cakes. Marna returned to talk about where you can access locally if you are caring for someone with dementia. This led to a local directory being created…a copy of which can be found at the Centre. We also began our Solstice draw ticket sales. Kindly sponsored by Geevor Tin Mining Museum and The North Inn, Pendeen.

Ships Bell from The Alacri

During August this year we were pleased to host the Bizarre Beachcombing Exhibition. We were very excited to see  what this was all about though some of you may have previously visited the 2013 exhibition on The Alacrity, one of the ships wrecked on our rugged and beautiful coastline.

Our AUTUMN FAYRE took place in September and we welcomed everyone in, out of the mist and rain. Workshops include ‘Going out with Dementia’ a talk by Marna from Dementia Friends about places to go and services available to family and carers in the Pendeen/St Just area. Children activities and Competitions…the winner of ks1 colouring competition  was Eloise Edwards who is 5 years old. Well done Eloise!

Our Winter Fayre on 9th December went very well.  Carol singers from Pendeen Church added to the Christmas spirit and to the arrival of our favourite seasonal character… you guessed? Santa! Thanks go also to Roger Jess of Shelterbox for bringing along a box to show us and speaking to folk about their valuable work. We raised £44.00 on the day, adding to £5.25 from our collection box.

Hot soup served at lunchtime went down particularly well – thank you to Pauline and her team.

A huge thank you to all the helpers and to of course the traders for making the day run smoothly and the success it was. Thanks also to Helen & Greg who brought Xmas trees from Carne Farm to sell during the day.

The Solstice Draw took place during the final Farmers Market for 2017. We were pleased that so many local folk won prizes. Thank you to all who bought a ticket. Congratulations if you won.
